Many truck shoppers default to brands like Chevy and Ford as they weigh their options for a new pickup. They would be wise, though, to look closely at the 2025 Nissan Frontier. For starters, it has more cab and bed-length combinations than a majority of its midsized competitors, and its optional three-channel Utili-track system makes it easy to secure everything from building materials to a couple of dirt bikes. It also has switch-activated four-wheel drive (available), a maximum towing capacity of up to 7,150 pounds, and more horsepower than the Ford Ranger, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tacoma (non-hybrid). Plus, the entry-level Frontier S is priced thousands less than the base Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tacoma, and GMC Canyon.
A new model year brings about a new look for the Frontier, with a reimagined front fascia and a squared-off design treatment with sharper body angles. Also, the SV has restyled 17-inch alloy wheels and the PRO-X gets a new tailgate finisher, redesigned dashboard trim, and a new paint color: Afterburn Orange. Nissan has also streamlined this season’s features to provide more value at each trim level. The SV now comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto, and the driver’s seat has two-way power lumbar support. The PRO-X has added a four-way power passenger’s seat and made enhancements to its onboard camera to optimize the off-road driving mode. Finally, the SL now gets Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor and wireless device charging.
Trims, Powertrains, and Capabilities
The ‘25 Frontier lineup consists of five trims: S (king cab long bed or crew cab), SV (king cab long bed, crew cab, or crew cab long bed), PRO-X (crew cab only), PRO-4X (crew cab or crew cab long bed), and SL (crew cab or crew cab long bed). In all of them, a 3.8-liter V6 pairs with a 9-speed automatic transmission, a powertrain that generates 310 horsepower and 281 lb.-ft. of torque. Rear-wheel drive (4x2) is standard in all but the SL, which has four-wheel drive (4x4); however, the 4x4 drivetrain is available on every trim and will add the following equipment to the S and SV: hill descent control, a steel front skid plate, and a front tow hook.
Maximum capability for the Frontier lineup comes courtesy of the SV king cab 4x2, which has a payload limit of 1,620 pounds and a towing capacity of 7,150 pounds. As for fuel economy, according to the EPA, 4x2 Frontier is good for 19 mpg in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway, which the 4x4 version gets 16 city/20 highway.
Standard Features
The S has 16-inch styled steel wheels, a black grille, LED taillights, remote keyless entry, fabric upholstery, a 7-inch advanced drive-assist display, second-row under-seat storage, two front-row USB ports, and a 12-volt power outlet. As a crew cab, the S also comes with four full-sized doors and seats for five passengers, a 60/40-split flip-up rear bench seat, 16-inch alloy wheels, and two second-row USB charging ports. The SV gets all of the above (including the crew cab-specific attributes) plus power side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, a metal grille, silver trim along the front bumper, and a vehicle security system; inside, look for premium cloth upholstery, chrome interior door handles, a 12.3-inch color touchscreen, and a six-way power driver’s seat.
Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology
All ‘25 Frontiers come with Safety Shield 360, Nissan’s suite of driver-assist technologies. These advanced safety features consist of high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, Intelligent Driver Alertness, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and lane departure warning. The SL is loaded with traffic sign recognition and the 360-degree Around View Monitor.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The S has an 8-inch color touchscreen, a four-speaker audio system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Siri Eyes Free, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, a radio data system, and access to NissanConnect services. The SV enhances both its multimedia and connectivity capabilities with a 12.3-inch color touchscreen and six speakers, SiriusXM satellite radio, wireless Android Auto, and wireless Apple CarPlay. The SL adds Nissan Door to Door Navigation and trial access to both SiriusXM Traffic and SiriusXM Travel Link, while also upgrading to a premium Fender sound system with 10 speakers and subwoofers.
