The Kicks Play is a novel concept in the Nissan lineup. Although it bears a new name, it’s not a new model. This subcompact crossover is actually the same as the base version of the 2024 Kicks. Nissan wanted to keep the low-cost/high-value combo of that popular base model, but it needed a bit of a name change since the Kicks had been redesigned for 2025. Adding the delightful “Play” to the name solved the dilemma quite nicely.
The 2025 Kicks Play shows no changes from the 2024 Kicks S, with the same look, the same equipment, and the same affordable sticker price (the Versa is the only Nissan model that’s priced lower). Drivers on a budget appreciate all of the above as well as its fine fuel efficiency (up to 36 mpg on the highway). It also comes with complimentary oil changes (up to three) over the first 2 years of 24K miles of ownership.
Mechanical Details
The Kicks Play has a super simple lineup of a single trim called the S. Its power comes from a 122-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, which is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This front-wheel-drive subcompact returns EPA-estimated fuel economy of 31 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway. It can carry up to 25.3 cubic feet of goods in its cargo area, although that can be extended to a potential 53.1 cubic if you fold down the rear seatback.
Standard Features and Options
The Kicks Play S balances basic equipment such as halogen headlights, charcoal-colored cloth upholstery, and manually adjustable front seats with conveniences like proximity keyless entry, push-button ignition, and cruise control. It also has three USB ports, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, a 12V DC outlet, and 16-inch steel wheels with covers. Buyers can add typical accessories ranging from appearance-related items (a rear roof-mounted spoiler, a stainless-steel exhaust finisher, and splash guards) to functional options like floor mats (carpeted or all-weather), side-window deflectors, a first aid kit, and LED puddle lights that display the Nissan logo on the ground. They even offer dog-related accessories: harnesses in varied sizes, an entry ramp, and a carrier. The optional Interior Electronics Package furnishes door pocket lighting, interior accent lighting, and a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror with a universal remote.
Advanced Safety Technology
The Kicks Play comes with the Nissan Safety Shield 360 technology array. The included features are automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic headlights, forward collision warning, rear automatic braking, and parking sensors (rear). A rearview monitor is standard as well, along with a set of airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and hill hold control.
Infotainment and Connectivity
A 7-inch infotainment touchscreen is the centerpiece of the Kicks Play’s dash. It has all of the essentials, with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and Siri Eyes Free voice recognition. An unbranded sound system with six speakers is part of the system as well.
